NBA playoff picture, standings, projections, current matchups: Lakers fighting for play-in life Tuesday night

The Los Angeles Lakers play the Dallas Mavericks on Tuesday night. Anthony Davis (foot) and LeBron James (ankle) are both likely out, and if the Lakers lose, they'll also find themselves out of the postseason picture. At No. 10 in the West, the final play-in spot, the Lakers lead the Spurs by one game in the loss column, but San Antonio has the tiebreaker via conference record.

We're going to be keeping close tabs on the playoff race with daily updates the rest of the way. Below is where things stand entering play on Tuesday, March 29.

WESTERN CONFERENCE

1. Phoenix Suns

Phoenix has clinched the No. 1 overall seed.

  • Current first-round matchup: TBD (play-in results)

2. Memphis Grizzlies

The Grizzlies have opened up an effective six-game lead over No. 3 Golden State with six to play, so they can't drop behind the Warriors. The only team that can mathematically catch the Grizzlies is the Mavericks, who trail by six in the loss column with the tiebreaker over Memphis secured. Memphis' magic number to seal the No. 2 seed is one.

  • Projected seed: 2
  • Current first-round matchup: Timberwolves vs. Clippers play-in winner
  • Tiebreaker vs. No. 3 Warriors: Grizzlies have clinched via 3-1 head-to-head advantage
  • Tiebreaker vs. No. 4 Jazz: Memphis has clinched with 2-1 head-to-head advantage
  • Tiebreaker vs. No. 5 Mavericks: Dallas has clinched with 3-1 head-to-head advantage

3. Golden State Warriors

The Warriors cannot catch Memphis for the No. 2 seed. Now they have to try to hold off No. 4 Dallas, which they lead by one in the loss column with the Mavericks having secured the tiebreaker, and No. 5 Utah, which they lead by two with one matchup remaining.

  • Projected seed: 3
  • Current first-round matchup: Nuggets
  • Tiebreaker vs. No. 2 Grizzlies: Grizzlies have clinched via 3-1 head-to-head advantage
  • Tiebreaker vs. No. 4 Jazz: Warriors lead season series 2-1 with one to play
  • Tiebreaker vs. No. 5 Mavericks: Dallas has clinched with 3-1 head-to-head advantage

4. Dallas Mavericks

The Mavericks knocked off the Jazz on Sunday to move into the No. 4 seed with seven games to play. Dallas is just one loss behind No. 3 Golden State with the tiebreaker secured. Dallas effectively leads No. 6 Denver by three games with the tiebreaker secured.

  • Projected seed: 5
  • Current first-round matchup: Jazz
  • Tiebreaker vs. No. 3 Warriors: Dallas has clinched with 3-1 head-to-head advantage
  • Tiebreaker vs. No. 4 Jazz: Utah currently own as division leader (season series tied 2-2)
  • Tiebreaker vs. No. 6 Nuggets: Dallas has clinched with 2-1 head-to-head advantage
  • Tiebreaker vs. No. 7 Timberwolves: Dallas leads season series 2-1 with one game to play

5. Utah Jazz

Utah lost to Dallas on Sunday and is now out of the top four, one game back of the Mavs. Utah leads the No. 6 Nuggets by an effective two games with seven to play.

  • Projected seed: 4
  • Current first-round matchup: Mavericks
  • Tiebreaker vs. No. 3 Warriors: Jazz trail season series 2-1 with one to play
  • Tiebreaker vs. No. 4 Mavericks: Utah currently own as division leader (season series tied 2-2)
  • Tiebreaker vs. No. 6 Nuggets: Utah has clinched with 4-0 head-to-head advantage

6. Denver Nuggets

The Nuggets trail the No. 5 Jazz by an effective two games with six to play. The priority is staying out of the play-in. Denver leads No. 7 Minnesota by two games in the loss column with one head-to-head matchup remaining on April 1.

  • Projected seed: 6
  • Current play-in matchup: Clippers
  • Tiebreaker vs. No. 4 Jazz: Utah has clinched with 4-0 head-to-head advantage
  • Tiebreaker vs. No. 5 Mavericks: Dallas has clinched with 2-1 head-to-head advantage
  • Tiebreaker vs. No. 7 Timberwolves: Denver trails season series 2-1 with one game to play

CURRENT PLAY-IN TEAMS

7. Minnesota Timberwolves

The Wolves are two losses back of No. 6 Denver with one head-to-head matchup remaining (April 1). If Minnesota wins that game, it would clinch the season tiebreaker over Denver.

  • Projected seed: 7
  • Current play-in matchup: Clippers
  • Tiebreaker vs. No. 6 Nuggets: Timberwolves lead season series 2-1 with one game to play
  • Tiebreaker vs. No. 8 Clippers: L.A. has clinched with 3-1 head-to-head advantage

8. Los Angeles Clippers

The Clippers are pretty firm to remain in the No. 8 spot, leading the No. 9 Pelicans by four games with seven to play.

9. New Orleans Pelicans

New Orleans rallied to beat the Lakers on Sunday to move back into the No. 9 seed -- tied in the loss column with Los Angeles -- with one head-to-head matchup remaining on April 1. The Pelicans have just a one-loss lead over the No. 11 Spurs with one head-to-head left and San Antonio has clinched the tiebreaker.

  • Projected seed: 9
  • Current play-in matchup: Lakers
  • Tiebreaker vs. No. 10 Lakers: Pelicans have clinched via 2-0 head-to-head advantage with one matchup left
  • Tiebreaker vs. No. 11 Spurs: San Antonio has clinched via 3-0 head-to-head advantage

10. Los Angeles Lakers

The Lakers fell to New Orleans on Sunday and are now in the final play-in spot, and not by much. The Lakers are tied in the loss column with No. 9 New Orleans with one matchup remaining, and New Orleans has secured the tiebreaker. The Lakers are also just one loss up on No. 11 San Antonio, and the Spurs currently own the tiebreaker via conference record.

All of this is to say, if the Lakers lose to the Mavericks on Tuesday night, the idle Spurs will jump them by way of the tiebreaker into the No. 10 seed, and the Lakers will be in the lottery for the time being.

  • Projected seed: 10
  • Current play-in matchup: Pelicans
  • Tiebreaker vs. No. 9 Pelicans: Pelicans have clinched via 2-0 head-to-head advantage with one matchup left
  • Tiebreaker vs. No. 11 Spurs: San Antonio currently owns via conference record (head-to-head tied 2-2, neither team leads division)

The Sixers are tied in the loss column with No. 1 Miami and No. 3 Milwaukee, and they play the Bucks for the final time on Tuesday night, which will decide the tiebreaker. The Raptors beat Boston on Monday to remain one game ahead of the Cavs for the No. 6 seed (Cleveland has the tiebreaker). The Raptors are also tied with the No. 5 Bulls (Chicago has clinched the tiebreaker). SportsLine projections have the Raptors jumping Chicago and finishing as the No. 5 seed.

Shaquille O'Neal says Dennis Rodman was his worst teammate: 'He was a great player, but he made it hard'

Shaquille O'Neal played for six franchises over a 20-year NBA career. That's a lot of teammates. Speaking on The Big Podcast with Shaq, the four-time champion and Hall of Famer revealed which one of those teammates was the worst.  "Worst teammate? Dennis Rodman," O'Neal said. "He was a great player, but he made it hard. Like when you try to corral the guys together and the people above you [are] letting this one guy do whatever he wants. So we had to be there an hour before the game. He'd come in fifteen minutes before the game eating chicken and rice. While the coaches are talking, he would jump in the shower. Cold shower. Come and give you 15-20 rebounds." O'Neal played with some characters in his time. We know about his beef with Kobe Bryant, who we know wasn't always the easiest teammate to get along with, though Shaq has long expressed regret over the way he and Bryant handled their relationship as young superstars, and eventually, he ...

Bill Russell Once Explained Why He Didn't Bother With Celtics Fans: "When I Was A Star, The Fans Called Us The 'Boston Globetrotters' Because The Celtics Had Black Players."

While the NBA is a beacon for freedom and tolerance in America, things didn't start off that way. In a place like Boston, during the 50s and 60s, racial tension was a pretty serious problem, and superstar big man Bill Russell had to deal with it on a game-to-game basis. Today, it can be hard for us to imagine just how difficult being a black basketball player really was back then. Fortunately, we have some clips: "The number one paper was the Boston Herald and they didn't like the idea of an NBA team having black players. Out there, the star was Bob Cousy. No matter what I did, Cousy was the star. I remember I had a game where I had 25 points, 25 rebounds, 10 blocks, and the Boston Herald said I was lucky to play with Cousy." Unfortunately, the media didn't give Russell his respect back then. Despite being the best player on the court, and on his team, Cousy and others always got the spotlight. Even the fans weren't very accepting of Bill: "I didn't...

From Deep: At long last, Nikola Jokic's Nuggets can envision getting to the top of the mountain

Jamal Murray tore his ACL on April 12, 2021. Leading up to that night, he'd been playing at an All-NBA level for two months: In a 25-game stretch, Murray averaged 24.1 points on .509/.459/.935 shooting splits, 4.2 rebounds and 5.2 assists. He was even more efficient than he was in the bubble playoffs, and his defense had improved, too. Murray only got to play with Aaron Gordon, the Denver Nuggets' big trade-deadline addition, for five games. They won them all except the one in which Murray got injured. In 110 minutes, their new starting five scored slightly more efficiently than any iteration of the Kevin Durant-era death lineup in Golden State and defended like a top-five team. Two Nikola Jokic MVP awards later, Murray is back. So is Michael Porter Jr., who signed a five-year extension about a year ago and needed back surgery nine games into the 2020-21 season. The Nuggets remember how easily everything slid into place with Gordon in the mix. Newcomer Kentavious Caldwell-Pop...
