2022 NBA Summer League: Trail Blazers beat Knicks in championship game; Trendon Watford named MVP

  On the final day of Summer League in Las Vegas, the New York Knicks and Portland Trail Blazers faced off in the championship game in front of a crowded Thomas & Mack Center. Both teams entered the title game with a 3-1 record, but it was the Trail Blazers who came out on top, beating the Knicks 85-77. This was the second time the Blazers won a Summer League championship, the last one being in 2018.  Blazers forward Trendon Watford was named MVP for the championship game after finishing with 19 points, seven rebounds, three steals and two assists. Brandon Williams led Portland in scoring, finishing with 22 points and five assists, while Jabari Walker tacked on 14 points and 11 rebounds off the bench. WATCH: Trail Blazers' Jusuf Nurkic confronts fan after game vs. Pacers, snatches and throws his phone

  Early on Sunday afternoon, the Indiana Pacers secured an easy win over the Portland Trail Blazers, 129-98. With the Pacers already eliminated from playoff contention, and the Blazers tanking to try and get there themselves, there wasn't much to discuss from this one.  That is, until a video surfaced of a postgame incident involving Trail Blazers big man Jusuf Nurkic -- currently sidelined due to plantar fasciitis -- and a Pacers fan. Following the final buzzer, Nurkic made his way over to a group of fans sitting courtside. He stared one of them down, grabbed the fans' phone and tossed it away. Nurkic then walked off without saying anything.  It's not clear what the fan said or did to upset Nurkic, and because the big man is out injured he did not address the media. NBA injuries: Zion Williamson cleared for on-court activities; Damian Lillard out at least couple more weeks

  There's only a handful of weeks remaining in the 2021-22 regular season as the NBA enters its stretch run to the playoffs. Unfortunately, many teams, including top contenders in each conference, are still shorthanded as they deal with injuries to key players.  In the Western Conference, Phoenix Suns point guard Chris Paul has a thumb injury that will keep him out for most of the remainder of the regular season, Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green is still out indefinitely with a back injury, Paul George may not return to the Los Angeles Clippers this season and Anthony Davis is likely out another several weeks with a mid-foot sprain.  Meanwhile, in the Eastern Conference, the flailing Brooklyn Nets got Kevin Durant back from the MCL sprain that has kept him out for a month, and Orlando Magic guard Markelle Fultz returned after over a year on the sidelines due to a torn ACL. Blazers' Joe Ingles says he understands Jazz trading him, but still gets 'very mad and frustrated with it'

  Joe Ingles is a member of the Portland Trail Blazers, but he hasn't played a game for them and won't do so before becoming a free agent in July. He still lives in Salt Lake City, where he played from 2014 until the trade that ended his Utah Jazz tenure a month ago.  Ingles tore his ACL on Jan. 30, and, when he returned to Vivint Arena on Wednesday, he told reporters that he understands why the Jazz traded him for 23-year-old guard Nickeil Alexander-Walker and 26-year-old forward Juancho Hernangomez, neither of whom is a regular in their rotation.  He does not, however, have to like it.   "I still think I could have been an asset down there to help the guys," Ingles said, via the Salt Lake Tribune's Eric Walden. Damian Lillard injury update: Trail Blazers star to begin reconditioning phase, out at least 2-3 more weeks

  The Portland Trail Blazers announced on Sunday that star guard Damian Lillard has progressed through the first phase of his rehabilitation from abdominal surgery without any setbacks. He has now been cleared to begin reconditioning, which includes basketball skill work, and will be reevaluated in two-to-three weeks.  Lillard, who had been dealing with a lingering abdominal problem for years, finally underwent surgery to correct the issue on Jan. 13. He was initially expected to miss six-to-eight weeks, so he is currently right on track with his recovery. That's good news for Lillard and the Blazers, but it's still unclear if he'll play again this season.  Lillard is looking at a mid-to-late March return at the earliest, and at that point there will be less than a month left in the regular season. Bill Russell Is Only The 5th NBA MVP To Pass Away After Kobe Bryant, Moses Malone, Wes Unseld, And Wilt Chamberlain

  The NBA just celebrated its 75th Anniversary last season, showing that the league is much younger than most of the major sports leagues worldwide. As a result, most of the legends of the game are still around and are allowing younger players to get first-hand advice from them.  Bill Russell was the most legendary player from the '60s and dominated the league by winning 11 championships in 13 years. He also won 5 NBA MVP awards in his era, proving that his defensive prowess is something that could catapult him to be an MVP despite never averaging more than 19 points a season.  Russell passed away yesterday and became only the 5th NBA MVP in history to pass away. The first one to do so was Wilt Chamberlain in 1999, followed by Moses Malone in 2015, Kobe Bryant and Wes Unseld in 2020, and now Russell in 2022.
