Chris Paul injury update: Suns star to return from fractured thumb Thursday vs. Nuggets, per report

Chris Paul is (reportedly) back. The 12-time All-Star will return from his right thumb injury on Thursday against the Denver Nuggets, per Yahoo Sports' Chris Haynes. The Phoenix Suns are officially listing him as probable.

Paul broke his thumb just before the All-Star break and has missed Phoenix's last 15 games. In that stretch, the Suns kept rolling, going 11-4 with a plus-9.8 point differential, the third-best mark in the league. On the season the Suns are a league-best 59-14, with a league-best plus-8.4 point differential.

It is a testament to Phoenix's depth, balance and coaching that it has thrived without Paul (and, for the last 10 games, without Cameron Johnson). With Paul is back in the starting lineup, there will be fewer minutes for Cameron Payne and/or Aaron Holiday, and there will be less playmaking responsibility on the shoulders of Devin Booker.

After the Nuggets game, the Suns will host the Philadelphia 76ers on Sunday, then visit the Golden State Warriors and Memphis Grizzlies next week.

Paul is having an All-NBA-caliber season, averaging 14.9 points, a league-high 10.7 assists, 4.5 rebounds and 1.9 steals in 33 minutes.

DENVER -- Chris Paul returned from a broken thumb sooner than expected when the NBA-leading Phoenix Suns played the Denver Nuggets on Thursday night.

"It's good to have him back," Suns coach Monty Williams said about an hour before tip-off. "He's been working diligently to not just get back but play at a level he wants to play. I'm sure the guys are jacked up."

Williams said he had a certain number of minutes in mind for Paul's return, "but you can't cookie-cut it. I have to watch him, especially when there's a break in the action. There are certain times with an athlete you've got to know if a guy is laboring. He knows and he'll tell me. But it's something we've got to monitor. You won't see him close to his normal 28-32 (minutes). With the games we have left we've got to do our best to get him where he needs to be."

Paul returned to the lineup roughly five weeks after he broke his right thumb in a game against Houston just before the All-Star break.

"It's kind of scary," Nuggets coach Michael Malone said while Paul was warming up at Ball Arena. "I've gotten the chance to coach Chris, know him. arguably the greatest point guard of all time. But what's really interesting is that they went 11-4 without him. They've won six in a row, seven of eight. That speaks to the quality of their depth and their team and their talent and the job that Monty Williams does.

"I knew he was close to coming back and I was just hoping that wouldn't be tonight."

Paul missed 15 games after getting hurt Feb. 16. The 36-year-old point guard is averaging 14.9 points and 10.7 assists.

The Suns were worried that Paul might miss the remainder of the regular season because of the thumb injury, but the veteran has been active in recent practices in a push to return. With a nine-game lead over second-place Memphis with nine games left for both teams, the Suns were in position Thursday night to wrap up the best record in the NBA and home-court throughout the playoffs.

"I didn't put a limit on it or think that deeply about it," Williams said about Paul's absence. "I was just listening to the medical staff and we were with Chris every day and talked all the time. I watched him progress in his rehab and watched him on the floor. I'm not surprised, I'm just grateful that he's back."

Phoenix has played better than expected without the 12-time All-Star guard. The Suns went 11-4 without Paul and took a six-game winning streak into their game at Denver, where the Nuggets are still awaiting the returns of their second- and third-best players. Jamal Murray is 11 months removed from a torn ACL and Michael Porter Jr. is recovering from an early-season back injury.

Devin Booker, Mikal Bridges and Deandre Ayton have played well in Paul's absence and Ayton had a career-high 35 points Wednesday night in a comeback victory at Minnesota.

The Suns lead the NBA with a 59-14 record and are trying to make the NBA Finals for a second straight season. They lost to the Milwaukee Bucks in six games in the Finals last year.

Video Of How 'Fake Klay Thompson' Got Past The Warriors Security And Gets Shots On The Court

The Golden State Warriors ended up winning Game 5 of the 2022 NBA Finals against the Boston Celtics and took a 3-2 lead in the series. It feels certain that the Dubs will win this series and win their fourth NBA Championship in the last eight years. While winning the finals will mean a lot for every player on the Dubs' roster, it will certainly mean more for Klay Thompson. Klay was sidelined due to injuries over the last two seasons and made a comeback this season. Finishing off the season with a ring will certainly be the cherry on top for him. Speaking of Klay Thompson, an incident took place around a certain lookalike of the Warriors' sharpshooter. We are sure you must remember the 'Fake Klay Thompson' who got famous a few years ago. Prior to Game 5 of the series, Fake Klay snuck into the Chase Center and got shots up before the matchup began. NBA fans found this hilarious, but it seems like the Warriors organization didn't. He was handed a lifetime ban from th...

Dennis Rodman Once Said He, Michael Jordan, And Scottie Pippen Could Lock Up LeBron James: "LeBron Is So Easy To Play. He’s So F**king Easy To Play. He Doesn’t Have Any Moves."

If there is something that will never end it is the comparison between players from different eras. Even in that niche, most comparisons revolve around the legendary players from the Chicago Bulls. Yes, we are talking about the likes of Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, and Dennis Rodman. A perfect example of that was seen by fans back in a 2019 interview featuring Dennis Rodman. The Worm was asked about his thoughts on guarding none other than LeBron James. Rodman replied: (starts at 6:06) "You know who could lock up LeBron? Me, Mike, and Scottie could. F*ck yeah. I would have locked his a** up. LeBron is so easy to play. He’s so f*cking easy to play, he don’t have any moves. Only move he has is streak down the line. He ain’t got no moves. Where he going?? Where is he going that’s quick? That’ll be sh*t, you can stop that. Scottie Pippen would have shut his f*cking a** down quick before I get to him. His game is too simple, he’s just big. I’m 260 and 6’8” and 6’9”, that’s the onl...

Bill Russell Is Only The 5th NBA MVP To Pass Away After Kobe Bryant, Moses Malone, Wes Unseld, And Wilt Chamberlain

The NBA just celebrated its 75th Anniversary last season, showing that the league is much younger than most of the major sports leagues worldwide. As a result, most of the legends of the game are still around and are allowing younger players to get first-hand advice from them.  Bill Russell was the most legendary player from the '60s and dominated the league by winning 11 championships in 13 years. He also won 5 NBA MVP awards in his era, proving that his defensive prowess is something that could catapult him to be an MVP despite never averaging more than 19 points a season.  Russell passed away yesterday and became only the 5th NBA MVP in history to pass away. The first one to do so was Wilt Chamberlain in 1999, followed by Moses Malone in 2015, Kobe Bryant and Wes Unseld in 2020, and now Russell in 2022. These are legends of the game, and it is heartbreaking to know that they aren't amongst us anymore. This observation was made by Reddit user u/WeaponFactory. Chamberl...
